The Blizzard of '09 was one of the most intense in recent memory for people all over the country. Hit particularly hard were areas on the East Coast that aren't always used to getting extreme amounts of snow. In areas like Maryland where 2 inches usually close the schools, a full two feet of snow blanketed the ground in a matter of a day. That means that a lot of people had a lot of snow to clear, and the people that fared the best were the ones with some great snowblowers on hand to help them take care of all of the mess.

Of course, it's this kind of weather that tends to bring people together. It's a common shared experience, and people help each other out. So when somebody on your block has a great snowblower, you know he was willing to help out neighbors, friends and family with his tools.

Living where I do, these snowblowers really saved the day in the blizzard of 2009. So many people were so terrible unprepared for this kind of emergency situation. You can take a look at this picture of a nearby apartment complex. Things were crazy, and people couldn't leave their homes. However, with the use of a few snowblowers, walkways began to be cleared and there were entrances and exits for buildings and other areas.

People could begin to go about their lives, and they wouldn't have been able to, certainly not as quickly, without the use of snowblowers. Far too many people were unprepared, and it's time that you make sure you're prepared for the next big storm or emergency situation.

Even if you don't live in a classic blizzard area, as we saw at the end of 2009 it really doesn't matter anymore. Weather patterns are changing, and you need to do everything you can to protect your home and your family. Take action and utilize some of our available snowblower reviews and snowblower ratings to help make a great purchase today. When the next storm hits, you'll have a powerful ally at your side, and now your neighbors will be knocking at your door asking for help. Be sure to oblige them, and rest easy knowing you have one of the best snowblowers working on your side.

The Toro Snow Thrower Power Clear 421Q is a single stage snow blower in the still new Power Clear series. The series has been completely redesigned and upgraded by Toro, and these machines are ready to take everything you can throw at them. For a singe stage snow blower, the Toro 421Q is surprisingly heavy duty. But it will still be easy to use and easy to maneuver, and it won't set you back an unreasonable amount of money.

Toro Power Clear 421Q Snow Thrower Features

Toro 421Q Snow Thrower

The Power Clear 421Q Toro snow blower has a 21 inch clearing width that is more than wide enough to handle the load at most households. It is powered by a Tecmuseh 5.5 horsepower, 4-cycle engine that gives it plenty of oomph. There are two variations of the Toro 421Q. You can get it with an electric start, or with a recoil start. The choice is yours, and some people prefer the recoil start. However the ease of use of an electric start makes it very appealing to most people.

A great new feature on this Toro snow thrower series is the "Power Propel" Drive System. What this does is basically eliminate all of the hard work of pushing your snow blower for you. The Power Propel system has rotor paddles constantly touching the ground and propelling the machine forward.

That means that the machine basically glides by itself, and won't need much physical exertion on your end to get it going. As if that wasn't easy enough, the Toro 421Q only weighs about 80 pounds. That makes it small enough and light enough for anybody to handle, and with the Power Propel drive system, it couldn't get easier.

The Power Clear 421Q Toro snow thrower also features the "Power Curve" System. The Power Curve is a way of designing the inner housing of the snow blower for maximum efficiency while clearing snow. It capitalizes on an inverted funnel shape and uses a curved rotor. What this boils down to is that you'll almost never get any snow clogs or jams, and you'll be throwing snow at a quick and efficient pace.

Final Word on the Toro Power Clear 421Q Snow Blower

The Toro 421Q can launch snow up to 35 feet in the right conditions and has an 1800 pounds per minute capacity. Don't let the single stage moniker fool you, this Toro snow thrower can stick up for itself. But with such a low weight, and utilizing the Power Drive system, it's amazingly easy to use. The Toro Power Clear 421Q is great for use around the house and in moderate snowy conditions.

For most people, it will be able to handle everything you need. If you need to clear a gravel or rock covered area, or you get lots of heavy snow all year, you might want to upgrade to a two stage model. Otherwise, the Power Clear series from Toro snow throwers will make an excellent addition to your tool (or toy?) collection.

The Intermediate Dual Stage Snowthrower from Snapper snowblowers is a popular model with many different people. It combines the affordability and maneuverability of smaller models with the power and efficiency of larger, commercial snowblower models.

The Snapper Intermediate Dual Stage is of course a two-stage snowblower. Some of its basic features include a 24 inch clearing width and a 19.75 inch intake height. This will allow you to handle snow drifts of over a foot and a half in a single passing. You'll find that for personal use, the Snapper Intermediate Dual Stage is going to be able to take care of large snowfall quantities and take care of it quickly, without unnecessary strain, struggle and time spent.

Features of the Snapper Intermediate Dual Stage Snowthrower

Snapper Intermediate Dual Stage

As mentioned, this Snapper Dual Stage (model 169513) has a 24 inch clearing width. This is smaller than the Large Frame Dual Stage snowthrowers that Snapper produces and distributes. However, no power or functionality is lost, and 24 inches is still a robust clearing width for household snow clearing. It has the same base design as the larger Snapper dual stage models, but comes without some of the extras, and operates on a slightly smaller scale.

There is currently only one Snapper snowthrower in their Intermediate Dual Stage class. This makes this model a rare combination that is cherished for many different reasons. For one thing, it is extremely easy to maneuver, turn and control. It weighs in at approximately 175 pounds and features a friction disc-drive system, with six forward speeds and 2 reverse speeds.

The engine is a powerful Snow Series model from Briggs & Stratton. It is a 4 cycle OHV, or overhead valve model engine. The engine produces an impressive 9 ft-lbs of gross torque and has an easy electric start with a recoil backup. It can hold up .75 gallons of fuel and comes with a "Fresh Start" fuel cap that is guarantee to keep fuel ready to go for at least six months.

The impeller has a 10 inch diameter and 4 impeller blades. The augers are made out of serrated steel (I always look for serrated steel augers on any two-stage snowblower I'm purchasing). The Snapper Intermediate Dual Stage can throw snow up to 38 feet and features a 200 degree rotational chute, along with an adjustable deflector.

There are many optional features that don't come included with the base Intermediate Dual Stage. This includes an optional headlight, optional drift cutters and an optional engine block heater. Whether or not you choose to spring for those really depends on the specific conditions you will be using the snowthrower in and how many bells and whistles you would like it to have.

Final Thoughts on the Snapper Intermediate Dual Stage

Would I buy this Snapper snowthrower? Absolutely I would, for personal use around a home. This model should hold up in the vast, vast majority of conditions and climates. You'll be able to easily tackle thick, wet snow and deep piles and drifts. Because it's relatively light and easy to steer, you won't have to worry about exerting too much energy or risking a loss of control. The Snapper Intermediate Dual Stage is the perfect combination of around-the-home size with commercial usability.

Ariens 1332 DLE Snowblower

If you've been here before, you know I love when snowblower companies name their models in a logical fashion. Ariens comes through in the clutch, with their easy to follow snowblower model names. The Ariens 1332 DLE is so named because it has a 13 horsepower engine, specifically the 13 HP Tecumseh Snow King OHV engine. Additionally, the Ariens 1332 has a clearing width of 32 inches. So there you go, it's the Ariens 1332.

This beast is going to work in all terrains and conditions. This is made possible in part by it's tall housing height of 23.5 inches. The machine itself is made with sturdy components that are up to professional standard. Ariens doesn't put the Professional Series tag on just anything. So the gear case is protected with cast iron and the augers are made out of alloy steel.

Like all the Pro Series Ariens snowblowers, the Ariens 1332 DLE has a 200 degree chute turn radius that can be operated with the Quick-Turn system and there is a remote system for the deflector control. All together the Ariens 1332 is very easy to operate and maintain.

With the "Disc-O-Matic" drive system and automatic traction control, you'll see that despite the huge size of this two-stage snowblower, she'll be easy to handle and won't require much force or exertion to use. And you use the dual handle "interlock control system" to navigate, steer and access all the bells and whistles.

Depending on conditions, you could potentially throw snow up to 50 feet with the Ariens 1332 and more important it can handle any type of snow or even icy build up. It features a 14 inch 3-blade impeller and steel serrated augers. You're going to be absolutely churning through the snow without any problems.

Bottom Line on the Ariens 1332 DLE

The Ariens 1332 DLE Professional Sno-Thro snowblower is not to be underestimated. It's heavy duty, and it's going to live up to the Ariens reputation. It will last for years and years, and it will make even the toughest and largest of snowstorms seem relatively tame. The Ariens 1332 makes your job and your life easier.

It is a professional quality snowblower, which means it won't be worth your money if you don't get a sizable amount of snow. There's no point in showing off a brand new Ariens 1332 DLE if you get 2 two-inch snow dustings every season. But when the inches pile up into feet, and you have a long ways to clear ahead of you, you'll be happy to have the Ariens 1332 on your side.

There are many different types of snowblowers, and as such it's important to always be comparing all of the various models and makes that you have to choose between. After all, not every person has the same needs and not everybody wants the same kind of snowblower. Here's a breakdown of the basic groups and types of snowblowers and a basic comparison between them.

Electric Snowblowers - Electric snowblowers are snowblowers that operate with a plug and cord. These snowblowers are best suited to lighter snow accumulations. Additionally, they are best used in smaller areas, when you don't have to stray vary far. Electric snowblowers are cheap and easy to maneuver, but typically aren't great for tougher tasks. Many electric snowblowers are handheld.

Gas Snowblowers - The majority of snowblowers on the market are gas snowblowers. Gas snowblowers come in many different varieties, which we'll get to down below. As opposed to electric snowblowers, they offer much more flexibility and ability overall. They can be used in harsher conditions and they can cover more ground. The majority of gas snowblowers are stand behind snowblowers, meaning they function with you standing behind them and pushing.

Read a complete comparison between electric and gas snowblowers

Single Stage Snowblowers - Single stage snowblowers operate using an auger that is responsible for collecting and dispersing all of the snow in your path. Single stage snowblowers are generally cheaper than two stage snowblowers, which are more heavy duty. Single stage snowblowers are a great idea for a person that wants to invest in a machine that will make his life easier, while not needing it to deal with intense snow accumulations. Single stage snowblowers work best with lighter snow, and less snow fall. They should not be used on gravel or rocky areas, because they can launch these objects while clearing.

Two Stage Snowblowers - Two stage snowblowers are like single stage snowblowers that are all grown up. Two stage snowblowers use an impeller to gather snow, and the auger to clear it away. This makes the process quicker and more efficient, and allows for handling greater loads. Two stage snowblowers can handle almost any situation you will throw at them. From wet, thick snow to a foot of powdery dust, two stage snowblowers are up to the task. These machines are typically well built and made to last for a long time, and will need less maintenance than single stage snowblowers.

Read a complete comparison between single stage and two stage snowblowers

Riding Snowblowers & Tractor Attachments - There are riding snowblowers, as well as lawn tractor attachments that you can purchase for snowblowing. These are best when you know you a) have a ton of ground to cover and b) you get a ton of snowfall each and every year. They are worth the investment because they can clear snow away extraordinarily quickly, while not tiring you out at all. These are often called commercial grade snowblowers, professional snowblowers or industrial snowblowers.

The Toro Power Max 1028 LXE is a two-stage snowblower from Toro. The Toro 1028 Power Max is an upper level snowblower designed to be able to handle heavy, frequent and wet winter storms. It's a powerful snowblower model that can get a lot done, and get a lot done quickly.

Toro Power Max 1028 LXE Review

Toro Power Max 1028 LXE

The Toro 1028 LXE snowblower is in their Power Max family of two-stage snowblowers. The Toro Power Max snowblowers come with many unique features not just to the Toro family, but specifically to their model line.

The Toro Power Max line of snowblowers has four different models all together, with the 1028 being the second most heavy duty.

Toro has long been known for producing high quality snowblowers that do what they are supposed to and last for long period of time. From all signs, the Toro Power Max 1028 looks to be another quality model if you know you have to handle a good deal of snowfall each and every year.

Features & Specifications of the Toro 1028 LXE Snowblower

Thankfully Toro makes it really easy on all of us by naming their snowblower models using specific numbers, rather than random designations. The Toro 1028 is so named because it features a 10 HP engine, and has a 28 inch clearing width. The engine is a Tecumseh Snow King engine, has an easy electric start and can hold 1 gallon of fuel.

The Toro 1028 of course features the Toro Power Max Auger system, which is why it's a part of the Power Max line of snowblowers. The Power Max system is designed to help move snow through the auger quicker and more efficiently. It helps to prevent build up through an expanded chute base and a sort of upside down funnel shape.

Snowblowers can't handle all of the snow directly in their path right away when there's heavy build up. So the Toro 1028 swings any un-thrown snow back around and toward the auger immediately, keeping everything moving, and even adding more distance to the throwing capability of the machine. The Toro 1028 can throw snow up to 45 feet and with the "Quick Stick" Chute Control you can easily dictate where that snow ends up going. It allows you to change both chute direction and the angle of the chute deflection for maximum control and flexibility.

Other features include a heavy duty auger gear case construction which makes your life much easier by taking out all of the work associated with changing out broken shear pins. That's exciting itself on its own, but a really great feature on the Toro Power Max 1028 is the freewheel steering design.

This enables you to make pinpoint turns and maneuvers without any hassle and without any trouble. You can make a U-turn at the bottom of your driveway and go right back up, without missing any snow path in between your last line. The freewheel steering really makes snowblowing that much easier, and it also helps the job go by quicker.

The Toro 1028 LXE is a fairly large snowblower, weighing in at nearly 250 pounds. While the steering system makes the machine extremely maneuverable, not everyone wants a snowblower that large and that heavy. This is a snowblower designed for people who are comfortable operating heavy machinery in tough conditions, and know they get enough snow to make the investment worthwhile.

Bottom Line on the Toro 1028 LXE

This is a high powered machine that can survive in thrive in harsh conditions. With its power, flexibility and maneuverability, it will make your life easier and make the task of clearing your driveway and your property much easier and much quicker.

I would recommend the Toro Power Max 1028 to anyone who wants a top of the market, high quality snow thrower and will have a lot of snow to deal with. If you're getting a handful of four inch snowstorms every year, than this snowblower isn't for you. It's simply to large and will cost you more money than it's worth for a small amount of snow.

But if you live in an area where you get a lot of snow, and you're looking for a snowblower that will hold up year after year, continuing to produce great results and making your life easy, than the Toro Power Max 1028 LXE and the Toro Power Max line of snowblowers will be a great investment.

If you've used a snowblower for any significant amount of time, than you'll know that a fact of life is that parts of snowblowers break. They wear down, they become overused, they break in half or become damaged. For the most part, there's no getting around this. Most snowblower repairs are necessary simply because after a period of time parts will break down.

You can minimize your need for replacement parts and snowblower repairs if you take proper precautions when operating your snowblower and you always check it to make sure it's in proper working condition. It's better to sniff out a damaged snowblower part early on and replace it, than to be stuck out in the middle of a storm and end up with a snowblower you can't use, and one that's probably in worse condition than it would have been in if you caught the problem right away.

I always keep spare snowblower parts on hand at all times, so I can prevent myself from running into a common problem and then being out of commission. How would you even get to the store if you couldn't clear your driveway because your snowblower is broken? That's why I keep some spare parts on hand at all time. Browse a selection of replacement parts for snowblowers.

So what are some of the most common snowblower repairs and snowblower parts that break? First, a problem many people run into is a broken shear pin. What some people don't understand is that it's an almost inevitability that you're going to have broken shear pins. That's why they are designed to do!

You see, shear pins are designed by nature to break down to prevent more serious engine components to become damaged. Think of them as the electrical fuse box of your snowblower. In your house, if something is overloaded, all of the wiring in the house doesn't catch on fire or explode. The fuse switches off, effectively limiting the problem and requiring that you go switch the fuse back on. In the case of shear pins, they actually break, separating the power train from the shaft.

I highly recommend keeping a handful of extra snowblower shear pins on hand. That way when it happens, and it will happen, you can let your machine cool down and then easily change in the new shear pin and keep on working.

One of the other most common snowblower repairs is replacing a snowblower v belt, or snowblower belt, that broke. Your snowblower v belts should last for several years, but that depends on how much you use your snow thrower and how hard the machine gets taxed when it does operate. I also recommend keeping extra belts on hand in case one breaks while you are using it. Always check your belts before you use the snowblower for the first time of the season to check for wear and tear.

Before you go take your snowblower into the shop or take apart the entire engine yourself to try to spot a problem, always check those two places first. The shear pins and the belts are the most common snowblower parts that break and will need repair. But they are just the beginning!

From there you can encounter problems with your roller chain or the roller itself.

If your machine can't even turn on to begin with, it may be a simple problem with a damaged spark plug.

Noticing extra amounts of dark smoke, strong fuel smells and so on could be symptoms of a fuel line or fuel filter problem.

Depending on the model and quality of snowblower you are using, the impeller blades or paddles themselves can become damaged.

These are just some of the most common snowblower repairs I've encountered, as well as a brief listing of some of the replacement parts for snowblowers that you may want to familiarize yourself with. If you are looking for parts for snowblowers, browse our selection of cheap snowblower parts for all brands and models.

Snowblowers are heavy pieces of machinery, which is why learning basic snowblower safety tips is so important. For many of us, our favorite snow throwers are almost like toys, we keep them in good condition and treat them right, and we love to get out there and use them. But nevertheless, these toys typically weigh several hundred pounds and include extremely fast moving, sharp pieces. That's why no matter how experienced you are using a snow blower, you should remind yourself of common snowblower safety tips.

Snowblower Safety Tips

First and foremost, one of the best snowblower safety tips is to never reach in with your hands to try to fix a jam. Even if your snowblower is turned off, there could be something lodged in there creating built up tension that can release when the jam is removed. Read more about fixing snowblower jams. And of course, in any situation, keep your hands and feet away from any moving parts.

Never leave a running snowblower unattended. If you're snowblower is turned on, you should always be right behind it.

A snowblower safety tip for single stage snowblowers is to never operate them on a gravel or rocky surface. A single stage snowblower can pick up and launch small rocks making it dangerous for people and property nearby.

Don't try to cover too much ground too quickly when using your snow thrower. Take your time, relax and get the job done. Your snow thrower will function more efficiently in this manner and you'll avoid any problems.

If you use an electric snowblower, an important snowblower safety tip is to make sure your cord is completely intact without any rips or tears. Also make sure you keep an eye on where the cord is, so you avoid tripping over it or getting it stuck in an awkward position.

As temping as it may be, don't try to make any personal modifications to your snowblower that remove the essential safety features your model may have installed!

Try to check your snowblower frequently for any damages, worn parts and so on. Replacement snowblower parts are usually cheap, but working with a damaged snowblower can ruin more expensive pieces, can cause frustration and can be potentially hazardous.

Always refuel your snowblower while it's off. Don't leave the engine running and then try to fill it up. This holds true for any repairs or inspections as well, and it's one of the most crucial snowblower safety tips I can tell you, always have the engine off before doing any kind of work on your snowblower. You should even disconnect the spark plug before making repairs.

Supervise a child or teenager using a snowblower for the first time, and if possible, always supervise them. Even if they are responsible and have used a snow thrower many times over, it's easier or a teen to lose focus or lose control of a heavy machine.

Consider using ear plugs when using a large or heavy duty snowblower. The decibel level from snowblower engines can get quite loud and can be damaging.

Stay moving in a forward motion, pushing your snowblower along. Of course, many snowblowers today have reverse functions and different speeds. But an important snowblower safety tip is to only push your snowblower forward at a comfortable pace while the machine is in a forward gear.

It might seem pointless, but make sure to read your owner's manual! There will be important usage instructions and guides, and it's always good to know and understand your machine.

There are other snowblower safety tips to consider and many of them involve using common sense. Of course you never want to operate a snowblower if you're drunk or if you're very tired. You want to be able to be mentally alert, have quick reaction time and strong physical control. If you have any other snowblower safety tips that you've picked up along the way, please share with the rest of us!

The Simplicity Dual-Stage I924E snowblower is in the "Intermediate" two-stage class from Simplicity. It's actually the only current model in this particular class. All together, there are 4 different classes of snowblowers that Simplicity produces. What the Intermediate tag basically means is that it's an extremely affordable yet still heavy duty two-stage snowblower perfect for personal use around your home and property.

Simplicity I924E Dual-Stage Snowblower Features

The I924E snowblower from Simplicity is a two-stage, or dual-stage snowblower model. It really has an impressive cast of features for a snowblower that's priced for the average family to be able to invest in.

The Simplicity I924E uses a Briggs & Stratton engine, just as all Simplicity snowblowers do. This engine is a 4-cycle OHV (Overhead Valve) engine called the Snow Series. It can produce 9 ft.-lbs. of gross torque, which means it's powerful but it's also maneuverable. The I924E has a .75 gallon fuel tank and has an easy electric start with a recoil backup. There are 6 different speeds going forward and 2 reverse speeds giving you plenty of flexibility.

With a 24 inch clearing width on the Simplcity I924E, you'll be able to tackle large areas in a very quick amount of time. The intake high is almost 20 inches, or 19 and ¾ inches to be exact, which is great for all types of terrain, inclines and obstacles. With 13-inch Snow Hog tires you'll have fantastic traction and be able to calmly and simply control your snowblower no matter what the conditions are.

Additionally this Simplicity snowblower has a 12 inch Auger diameter to help you quickly churn through that snow and ice. The auger itself is made out of heavy duty serrated steel and is protected in an aluminum housing unit. There are 4 impeller blades with a diameter of 10 inches.

The Simplicity Intermediate Dual-Stage I924E snowblower has chute rotation capabilities of up to 200 degrees. With that fully adjustable chute you can throw your snow up to 38 feet.

Should you buy a Simplicity I924E Dual-Stage Snowblower?

OK, I just threw a whole lot of numbers and technical specs at you. For most of us, and even myself from time to time, all of those details can be hard to sort through. So what does it all really mean for the Simplicity Dual-Stage I924E?

The bottom line on the Simplicity I924E is that it's an extremely flexible snow thrower that can stand up to a wide variety of chores. Because it's relatively light and compact, you can get in and out of tight spaces and you can really use pinpoint control on your property. Yet, with a 24 inch clearing width you can cover big swaths of property, whether on your driveway or a walkway, quickly and easily.

If you face really tough conditions or need even more power, then Simplicity makes larger models, including their Large Frame Dual-Stage Series and Signature Pro Commercial Duty Dual-Stage. For most people though, the Simplicity I924E Dual-Stage is going to be perfect. As mentioned, it's a fantastic combination of flexibility, raw power and functionality, plus it's all very well priced.

The Honda HS724 snowblower series is a powerful and heavy duty line that can meet the toughest of jobs. There are two different models within the Honda HS724 snowblower series, the HS724WA and the HS724TA. The two models do have some significant differences between them and so we'll take a look at both of them in this Honda HS724 snowblower review.

This snow throwers in this Honda snowblower series are two-stage snowblowers. They are top of the line models that are able to handle huge amounts of snow (the HS724TA boasts over 50 tons/hour of snowblowing capabilities and the HS724WA boasts 46 tons) and will last you for a significant period of time.

These two Honda snowblowers are compact enough to be deployed for personal usage around your home and property. But they are versatile and strong enough to be used for commercial businesses and properties as well. So which of these Honda snowblowers is best for you and your needs?

Honda HS724 Snowblower Series Features and Specs

The Honda HS724 snow blowers weigh approximately 200 pounds. They are gas powered, two-stage snowblowers that use a Honda GX200 engine. Both will be able to be operated for 3.5 hours continuously before needing to refill the tank, which holds just a bit under 1 gallon of fuel. These two Honda snowblowers feature automatic decompression for easy starting.

Both of these Honda snowblowers feature a 24 inch clearing width. Their discharge chutes can fling snow an impressive 46 feet and their chutes have 210 degree rotation capabilities. Additionally, the Honda HS724 snowblower series features ice breaking, serrated augers and metal auger housing. Combined, this means you will have minimal jams and you won't have to worry about damaged parts.

Honda snowblowers are easy to use, control and adjust and Honda snowblowers have a reputation for being long lasting and well made.

Differences between the Honda HS724WA and Honda HS724TA

The key difference between these two Honda snow throwers is just one little letter, the "T" or the "W". The "T" stands for traction, and the Honda HS724TA snowblower uses a track drive system which provides excellent control and maneuverability in any condition.

The "W" then of course stands for wheels, and without the traction system the Honda HS724WA has an extra few inches of clearance, 20 inches compared to 16. The two models are fairly comparable (the traction system for the HS724TA raises the price just several hundred dollars) so it really comes down to preferences, as well as terrain type and expected conditions.

Should you Purchase a Honda HS724 Snowblower?

If you're in an area where you get a lot of snow each year, then you know you need a heavy duty, durable, two-stage snowblower. The Honda HS724 snowblower will be able to handle your clearing needs and then some, in any climate and with even the thickest and wettest snow. The Honda HS724 is an investment, but will provide long lasting and easy snowblowing capabilities. Which model you need really just depends on how much you value the traction system or would expect to need it.
