Toro Snow Thrower Review: Power Clear 421Q Single Stage

The Toro Snow Thrower Power Clear 421Q is a single stage snow blower in the still new Power Clear series. The series has been completely redesigned and upgraded by Toro, and these machines are ready to take everything you can throw at them. For a singe stage snow blower, the Toro 421Q is surprisingly heavy duty. But it will still be easy to use and easy to maneuver, and it won't set you back an unreasonable amount of money.

Toro 421Q Snow Thrower

The Power Clear 421Q Toro snow blower has a 21 inch clearing width that is more than wide enough to handle the load at most households. It is powered by a Tecmuseh 5.5 horsepower, 4-cycle engine that gives it plenty of oomph. There are two variations of the Toro 421Q. You can get it with an electric start, or with a recoil start. The choice is yours, and some people prefer the recoil start. However the ease of use of an electric start makes it very appealing to most people.

A great new feature on this Toro snow thrower series is the "Power Propel" Drive System. What this does is basically eliminate all of the hard work of pushing your snow blower for you. The Power Propel system has rotor paddles constantly touching the ground and propelling the machine forward.

That means that the machine basically glides by itself, and won't need much physical exertion on your end to get it going. As if that wasn't easy enough, the Toro 421Q only weighs about 80 pounds. That makes it small enough and light enough for anybody to handle, and with the Power Propel drive system, it couldn't get easier.

The Power Clear 421Q Toro snow thrower also features the "Power Curve" System. The Power Curve is a way of designing the inner housing of the snow blower for maximum efficiency while clearing snow. It capitalizes on an inverted funnel shape and uses a curved rotor. What this boils down to is that you'll almost never get any snow clogs or jams, and you'll be throwing snow at a quick and efficient pace.

Final Word on the Toro Power Clear 421Q Snow Blower

The Toro 421Q can launch snow up to 35 feet in the right conditions and has an 1800 pounds per minute capacity. Don't let the single stage moniker fool you, this Toro snow thrower can stick up for itself. But with such a low weight, and utilizing the Power Drive system, it's amazingly easy to use. The Toro Power Clear 421Q is great for use around the house and in moderate snowy conditions.

For most people, it will be able to handle everything you need. If you need to clear a gravel or rock covered area, or you get lots of heavy snow all year, you might want to upgrade to a two stage model. Otherwise, the Power Clear series from Toro snow throwers will make an excellent addition to your tool (or toy?) collection.

This “review” (more like an extended ad) looks like it was written by the Toro marketing department. Note the hackneyed phrase “ready to take anything you can throw at them.” What does that mean in real, measurable terms?

Also it begins with something customers don’t care much about–redesign and upgrade–but which companies love to hype. This is bloated marketing-speak, more about selling than filling customer needs.

Toro gets good reviews from Consumers Union (Consumer Reports), and seems to be a good model–quite effective. But don’t take that info from a seller of the equipment, with a vested interest in hyping and moving product. Look for independent voices.

This is a paid, not independent, review.
And, if you remove this comment, it will appear elsewhere–and I’ll note that you removed it, thus piling on more evidence of complicity with the manufacturer.

Sorry you don’t like the site. I write about snowblowers that I’ve used and have worked for me personally. I don’t write about products that aren’t any good… bottom line. It’s not a paid post, although yes, of course, there is advertising and products for sale on this website.
